Be a human being first, after leader. Lead with positive energy and spirit.
Show understanding for members of the team, find time to listen about their private life, needs, problems and offer help if you can. Give them motivation and support. Teach them what they don't know. Ask them for a opinion. Trust and express trust. Members will more respect you and they will give the best in job. Unfortunately, this is not always ideal, but it is good to make a filter by simple way to remove persons who are not compatible with the team. Sometimes, as a leader don't want to say complain to a team worker, but other members will say to him/her to improve his/her behavior.
I think my best is that I have reputation. I have this by my people and my clients as well.
I am a leader that anybody can trust.
I am leading by example.
I can give vision to my team and I can motivate them.
I am open minded and honest.
I am straight talker.
From experience i think the worst thing you can do as a leader is tell some one of your worker, who worked hard on an idea, problem or project: "This is wrong". this kills their ambitions and creativity. from personal experience the best thing to say is "nice idea but how about if we did this or how about to consider this".
this gives them the feeling that what they did is not entirely wrong and they get the feeling that you are part of their team and not just the guy with the orders.
We work as team for min8 hours/day. So, you see them much more than your kids or wife. It should be built on respect and honest to gain their best offered.
