I personally belive that if you have a good foundation in the language(english) you will surely have a good communication skills to a lot. Because english is seen as the most used language as medium of communication. So at the end of the day is a must for individuals to learn and understand the language

I think to be good in English language, you must have the the four skills (Listening, reading, writing and speaking) and the four skills must be used together without seperation

As an Expat working in Saudi Arabia there are three distinct ways people like to communicate:

1. SIMPLE - keep English sentences simple.  Clear and to the point.  Anything more than the essential will get lost in translation.

2. NO ENGLISH.  There are quite a few people who have no interest in the English language.

3. MOTHER TONGUE LANGUAGE - It's well over time more English/Bristish people and other expats learned other languages.  Many foreigners can speak more than one language, many expats cannot and are unwilling to learn another language.  English will not be the ''main' language soon and learning chinese may become a necessity and not a luxury!

It is not enough to understand English only by writing,  for you to be proficient you must learn to SPEAK, WRITE and UNDERSTAND English.

A perfect sample would be your resume, if you have a very impressive resume written in English that you will submit to employers, you have a high probability that they would like to invite you for an interview, but if they found out that you have a poor English speaking skills they will be curious why the resume is not consistent with the way you talk with them.

I hope this helps :)

For you as a Translation Student, you should focus on the written language more than on the spoken because your job shall always be to write not to speak. Once you are a good writer, you will be a good speaker too.

It is ideal to have a good command over English and a neutral accent if you can, but the most important thing is to communicate clearly in simple words rather than amaze people with high vocabulary and Jargon

A good communication requires one to be good at all the four skills, viz Listening , Speaking, Reading and Writing. and speaking skills are more challenging. Particularly, when one get to be communicating with native speakers of English language. The native speakers, use connected speech. A non native has to be good at connected speech techniques such as assimilation, elision, week forms, stresses, intonation, linking etc.
