Stress corrosion is growth of crack formation over metal surface in corrosion environment.
Stressed locations in a metal are active spots with higher energy levels and therefore anodic to the rest of the metal. There will corrode in preference to the rest of the metal.
Area which affect by stress is less resistance to corrosion and become anodic to the rest of metal
beacuse the microstructure is changed due stress
IT CAUSES CORROSION CRACKING ,CORRION BRITLEMENT
Stress is the way of hardening the material. Because wit stress grain boundaries of material starts increasing, which are more unstable in corrosive environment. And with the increase in grain boundaries under stress in corrosive environment, helps corrosive media to attack on boundaries thus increasing the corrosion rate. This is termed ass Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC).
in the presence of a corrosive medium static tensile stress contributes to stress corrosion cracking .
if there is a cyclic stress acting ,then it may contribute to fatigue corrosion .
static tensile stresses can be either applied direct stresses or residual stresses. stress leads to penetration of fine cracks into the material and these cracks may have either transgranular or intergranular morphology.
