Periodontal pockets are pathologically deepened gums, this is a common problem in patients with inadequate oral hygiene. If untreated, over time they can lead to bone loss and loss of tooth.

Treatment for periodontal pockets basically depends on the pocket depth, in most cases, scaling and root planing (also termed as "deep cleaning") is adequate to remove the local deposits which results in a resolution of the periodontal pockets.

However, in cases of advanced gum disease and severe periodontal pockets, the tartar and other accumulations cannot be accessed by merely scaling and root planing, thus periodontal surgery is required.

The advantages of periodontal flap surgery is that it can restore the lost bone in case of severe disease, and change/improve the soft tissue contours.
