A customer can work with2 different mindsets and this answer will depend on who owns which one:
1. The customer believes in functionality and wants more out of each buy. He will expect discounts, freebies, good technical advice (which in today's market is partly redundant as quite a few customers would go after researching the product they want to buy) and after-sales support that brings confidence. This sort of customer would always want to visit a large store where bundled offerings are more probable.
2. The customer believes in happiness and simple convenience. These are customers who have been visiting the very same smaller-sized stores for all their needs. For groceries, they will go to the same store they have been to for decades. For electronics, they will go to the local store where the owner and the staff recognize him well enough to provide a good amount personal attention. The advantage to this customer is personal attention provided, better deals than new customers based on relations with staff, probable freebies and most importantly, a happy conversation where he knows he is respected.
It's really not about what the store can offer, but what offering the buyer is looking to get. In a general scenario, the second type of customer is moving to larger stores because he/she is more aware of products now owing to the internet and proliferation of information. Larger stores offer unmatched convenience on bulk purchases and customers are ever-ready to bank on this.
