Keeping the fine balance between good customer service and sale. That’s my profile. I think it needs a little explanation. A BPO is an expense to the client. And the expense in terms of billing minutes is quite large if it is in the form of long distance calls routed to India from US and back. The customer dials a1800 no but the client has to pay the bill. The client tries to mop up at least some of the cost through sales. But the bpo needs to be careful. There is CLIENT mandate “NO HARD PITCHING”. Because that would lead to dissatisfied customers and the very purpose of customer service is lost. Sale has to be a part of the technical solution. If the customer laptop is running slow and there is a space crunch the TECHNICAL HELPDESK REP can soft pitch for sale of RAM. Or if an old printer is not compatible to win8.1 laptop ( as the patch is not available)the rep could pitch for an updated printer. In the banking sector it could be pitching for a new value added credit card to a high profile customer who is going to Dubai for a shopping trip. In the mobile cell phone sector it could be pitching for a high end3g or4g mobile to a2 g user who is looking for a lot of data usage . Keeping the balance is very important as hard pitching would lead to irate customers. I know hard pitching very well as at the start of my career I was into door to door hardcore cold call selling. I had to knock every door and pitch for sale . Sympathy for a guy who is slogging in the Sun was the greatest motivating factor for a person cooling off under an ac. This factor is absent in the present scenario. At most it could be thankfulness of the customer after the issue was resolved to his/her satisfaction.
