Some business entities practise so unknowingly. Business development is not only restricted to marketing and sales but has its' scope widely open to bring in improvements in all the functional areas to develop the business entity.

Let's be honest and face the truth : business owners these days are looking at business developer as a sales man ! So .. it is a part of his job to participate in sales achievements.

But to develop the business of any organization, you must make proper marketing for the products - so it's also a part of his job to participate in the marketing process.

Successful companies are mostly having a wide range of clients, partners and supportive entities - and the business developer is involved deeply within this cycle - So account management is a big part of his responsibilities.

We could count endless tasks and skills of the successful business development manager ... but in short - in my personal and professional point of view : The successful business development manager is supposed to be the coordination and supportive link in the organization and has to be involved within various departments ... He is using all the departments to gain success - but also supporting all these departments to reach their maximum performance ....

Typical goals of business development include brand placement, market expansion, new user acquisition, and awareness -- all of which are shared goals of marketing.

Do companies look to business development to the same concept?

Your this question could not be answered well, why because each and every company has their own JOB Description and they are insisting the DBM to follow it,  you can imagine if a BDM did not follow instructions from above, what will happened ?

Business Development : Is a Part Of Marketing but not Sales . Business Owners today consider -it a part . But , in long term its a big loss . A Bd Manager - Could be a very good Sales Man / Women . But a Very Good Sales Men / Women might have many lacks to be a BDM .

One who promotes the Brand - Is a Marketing Person - He is BDM too - He/ She is a Brand Manager too but need not be a good sales men / women .

R&D is an essential part of the business development cycle. Most succeful corporations invest in research & development due its importance to keep the business up-to-date & running with new ideas. The competitve nature of todays market demands it. Some comapnies started by selling thier products to gain some reputation then expand with a marketing startegy while others would consider to go the other way around. I'd say it's a compination of both.
