I do agree with your statement. Marketing is all about attracting customers to the product ( lead generation). But marketer's job is far morethan that. Effective and efficient marketing will also increase the good will of the firm / brand. It will increase brand stability and long term profit. Efficient marketing can also attract investors.

Disagree. Marketing is not all about lead generation. It's getting the people to understand what your company is all about , offering your services and also the benefits of buying from your company.
Its just not about who you want to sell to, we also need to determine what it is that will get them to buy.
There are business that require small lead generation to be profitable and then there are business who require a huge amount. In the end, it's all about how much revenue you generate and that's the only thing most stakeholders care about.
