A hospital that treat chronic illness patients should have a wound care specialist not only but emergency hospital also the bad news that this specialty is rare and un-recognize although for many of injured and burned cases if it is handled properly in the beginning it will save a lot of cases and huge money as well plus help in infection control of the whole place

Hi,

I believe it is dependent on the circumstances. If we are talking about a patient who has sustained an injury to…lets say their lower leg or foot region and in addition the patient has serious systemic problems then immediate access to a wound specialist would be necessary. In my particular field, a patient with peripheral vascular disease and underlying neuropathy in their feet and legs would and can necessitate for immediate wound care. This is especially true if the individual/patient sustained any minor trauma or developed a nasty wound that could lead to an infection and possible amputation. A lot of these patients have issues with diabetes (poor glycemic control), are smokers, obese, have HTN, cholesterol, and PAD to name a few. Again urgency for a wound care specialist is mostly based on case by case and each wound care patient is unique.
