Samrt employee must pursue promotion rather than raising salary because it is the only way for career development that will lead to increase his/her income now or then in his/her company or other company.
If you feel the promotion as an opportunity to learn more and increase chance of further beneficial promotions--promotion without salary increase will be beneficial in the long run--especially for youngsters.

Promotion without increase salary according to me .. i think when u get promotion then u will get increase salary after more experice.. Bcoz then u will be able to get more increment after ur expericnce which is come from new work, responsibilities, lots of activiti which u handle..Example :- If u get increment in your salary like you are a executive then you some get money as ur company rules according which is provide in some percentages and u will get promotion as manger then after some times u will give ur best, and learn more things and then company wiil give u as manger increment facilities power and increment also.....
Increase salary without promotion is better. Because, a promotion increases status, but without increasing salary it is tough to manage.
For me if you want to learn new things the opt for promotion without increase, on ther hand if you want to earn more the salary increase without promotion.
