Any business is built base on one of the following:
- Produce a product and then create the need for it
- Identify the needs from the market and the produce the product that fulfills these needs
- A combination of the two.
As for the second option, some needs may be common, others may vary depending on many issues like segment, environment, culture and even personal issues. Many companies started to offer customized solutions to get closer to customers who prefer to have products that can fulfill their personal needs. That can be done either by producing a complete new product upon customer specifications or take an existing product and make some modifications to meet customer needs.
Advantages:
- Meets customer's needs more closely
- Customer satisfaction
- Production on demand
- Keeps your business up to date
Distadvantages:
- High costs
- Needs specialized skills
- increase support compixity

Global customization means more sales ,put into a computer one things a person would like to own and then ask what they liked about this product from people of all nations you will end up with10 things that will be common to all of them , then produce a quality product with outstanding quality control and back up service ,who will not buy?
I believe if you have bought a top tier world class solution , then the organization should go for the customzations only if it is something that will directly hurt their revenue otherwise if you have a top tier solution it wiill already have the best practices incorporated.
Customization adds to the complexity to complexity of implementation and houskeeping of the solution though the advantage is getting exactly the internal requirement cutom built.
There are many advantages to Mass Customization.
It allows customers to create customized products of what they desire.
It is very cost effective. You get to create every single aspect of your product.
If it is shoes, you will be able to customize what they use to make them., the shoe strings that will be on them and the different colours the shoes will be.
If you are building a car you will be able to decide what they use for the inside, what colour the car will be and what options you want such as rims and sound systems
Every aspect of the product will be up to you and what you want. There are also disadvantages when it comes to Mass Customization. The layover time is one of the biggest problems of Mass Customization. Since it is a custom product it will take longer to reach the consumer. When you order something that isn't custom it will reach you in a decent amount of time. When you customize it, it will take3 to4 weeks longer than a non-customize product because they have to build it from the ground up for you. Another disadvantage would be that you can not return a custom product if you are not satisfied because it was created specifically for you. Like anything there is major advantages and disadvantages.
Customization has been there all the time. I have heard about in the IT field back in the eighties and we were talking at that time about "tailoring"or customizing certain offerings/solutions to specific customer needs.
Advantages are better customer satisfaction ,disadvantages would be a smaller market segment And customer base.
