Mostly AutoCAD

Pro/e is the best for both2D and3D. AutoCAD is the best2D.

Ahhhh….that’s truly a question I had when I did study the CAD. I indeed did study some of them like Autocad, Mech autocad, CATIA, ProE, Uni graphics. Well here I could say that I liked CATIA a lot then the Pro-E and then Uni-graphics. Well, I gave you an answer, but it would be very true if one is a mechanical or automobile engineer or aircraft/aeronautical engineers. Most of the mechanical engineers might agree with me if they had worked on it. But for your answer for the most viable software in CAD depends on the industry, the software used widely in the industry, the level of simplicity to handle the drawing and3D conversion. So let me make the answer industry based, I told CATIA is the best software I worked because it had lot of flexibility in design and had much features not only in terms of designing but also for processing the CAD drawings for CNC/ production process. The versatility of CATIA over Pro-E is that it doesn’t have constrains of limitation on2D to3D transferring (like open object/errors) but one thing I like more in proe is the design of the screw threads which is not rendered in3D for CATIA. Then CATIA has a lot of flexibility, well many industry specialist many not have known this cause they use some other commonly used software, like pipeline, plant layout, cnc manufacturing, electrical drawing, sheet metal, surface drawing, structure analysis, FEA analysis, no wonder it’s made for Boeing. So, whichever software you feel interesting and feel like working would become your favorite depending on the field. To say civil engineers won’t use CATIA for drawing a plan, that’s because the plant leads to the3D modelling, but in CATIA you can do2D base and convert to3D and you can make2D drawing easily by drop and drag (it’s a top up model). That’s like you can get the2D/plan out of the3D/elevation.

However civil engineers find it easy to work on Auto cad, then the MEP on Revit, then the electrical/electronic on smart draw/autocad so on. Then the viability depends on the level of understanding the CAD software and its features and level of expertise one has to handle the drawing.

Say if u want to draw a cycle tube you can make it in simple2d and3d drawings in3dmax (this is for design or sketch purpose), but if you want to make a car you can do it in but it can be done better integrating electrical, surface, body structure, sheet metal, plc in CATIA or automotive specific solid works automotive edition Autodesk product design and manufacturing (this is for the automotive industry for integrated technical design and production).

Sorry guys… it’s so lengthy explanation so to short it, the best software depends on the industry and functionality of the software level used.
