Well this is where it comes on the Ethics of Conducting a Business. In this kind of situation its a question of Trust, Loyalty and Credibility of the company. You can increase credibility and the trust of your company by informing the customer.

As per my opinion, Customer should be informed. there is few reason,

1) Moral/ Ethical duty of seller

2) In All Organisation everyone almost doing the reconciliation of Debtors/Supplier. Before customer ask         you and you and you take a reactive stance, better take proactive stance that will increase confidence

3) Keep yourself in this Scenario and think if someone will do same thing with you and what will be your           reaction

This is my stance and maybe someone can have different opinion with justification

Please vote if you agree with my opinion

Not informing customers about extra money they pay by mistake for goods or services is a clear violation of a basic business ethic which will result in making an easy profit in a short period of time and harming the company reputation in the long run. Also, i believe the business behavior of the company 's employees will be effected since they can cheat on customers whenever they can which will make their main focus is how to hunt customers mistakes rather than serving them in a professional way. From my own experience i like they way famous companies like Apple and amazon deal honestly with their customers which has resulted in purchasing their goods with no fears of being cheated.

Best Wishes

Note sure how the system accepted the duplicate payment against the same invoice# (considering even a basic system should warn the user of the already paid amount). Regardless of the amount, it must be brought into the notice of the customer IMMEDIATELY. Moreover the instructions from the customer must be obtained on whether to return the amount or keep it as an access amount and use it for the next transaction.

Good luck!
