Acknowledging a person when they are10 feet from you with a smile and "how may I help you?" or "are you finding everything you need?" lets the person know that they are important and you are not ignoring them. This used to be the customer service requirement in a retail establishment I worked for in the past, but the employees and management have become very lax in this policy. Their customer service has become very poor.
When you show the customer you care about them as an individual and not just for their money, then you will win and keep them as loyal customers.
