Listening is very important of course and actually it is the only way any sales person can close a deal. If you listen you will be able to understand the exact customer needs, concerns and issues and hence you will be able to address them and provide "THE" right solution to satisfy their needs. Selling whatever you have to any customer will not work, you have to satisfy each customer's specific needs and to satisfy their needs you have to know them and to know them you have to listen and observe. A good listener excels in whatever he does, not only in sales, because he listened, observed and understood before taking action.

A product has the feature and the advantage of the feature is Benefit. Even though the salesman's duty is to sell, the prospect will not be willing to buy if the salesman is going to offer a particular feature of his product for which the prospect does not have a need. Hence if the sales man listens to the prospect then the customer directly or indirectly will reveal his need and the sales man now can easily understand which is the most suitable feature of his product that can satisfy the revealed customer need. Based on this the salesman can clinch the deal, So Just asking questions and listening to the customer's answer is the best way to clinch a deal. Hope i have answered your question.
