Suffixes and prefixes are called affixes in grammar. The purpose of affixes is to change a meaning of a word "Root".

A suffix is added to the root of a word to change its meaning; for example: without and before. A prefix on the other hand is added to the begining of a word; for example: incapable and prefix.

Sometimes, prefixes are hyphenated.
