Can an outdoor salesman be replaced by indoor salesman for an out door sales job?

An outdoor sales man require marketing talents and collection capabilities.  He is also required to change his time frame as the collection is linked to it.  He need to approach the client as the clients on requirements, but in the show-room the customer approaches as per our schedule and timings and for him the collection is not at all a botheration. Apart from this Out door duty require driving skills and open mindedness to raise to the occasion, reporting capabilities and enhanced accountability.

In principle, NO.

We all would agree that in-depth job-process knowledge, product knowledge and sales skills are required for both the roles equally.

Major differences in outdoor / indoor sales which has just crossed my mind; (henceforth the list might not be comprehensive and complete)

  1. Outdoor sales requires skills like fixing and taking appointments, route-planning, honoring time etcetera. Indoor sales requires to be present at the designated location in the designated time-periods.
  2. Indoor sales would require to be comfortable with long hours of getting used to being indoors, usually in the same location, same people, objects and the sameness of things. Outdoor sales would require to get used to always meeting different people, new places, new organisations, new routes etcetera.
  3. Indoor sales is a time-bound job although here the scope for earning performance-incentives are less when compared with outdoor sales which is not time-bound, but here the scope for earning performance-incentives are more.
  4. Indoor sales is best for comfortable, risk-free, lesser stress-seeking personalities while outdoor sales is meant for risk-taking, adventurous, more stress-seeking personalities.
  5. Outdoor sales would require travelling, being out-of-station, and henceforth driving skills are an advantage. Indoor sales does not require being out-station as well as driving skills or travelling.

Sales Man/ Women ( Whether Indoor or Outdoor ) : If clear in work and is knowing their work properly - Can sell its service / product well after shifting its job profile a bit . But, if it is just for the name sake a tele seller expected to sell a product (or) a sales men / women who are going point to point do wonders after shifting its job profile. They are just doing their duty like a9 to5 job duty types without understanding the basic principle . And it may hit , it may not .
