Diagnostic criteria for diabetes mellitus is fasting blood glucose and post prandial glucose assement, as measured2hours after consumption of anhydrous glucose.

Typically fasting blood glucose levels >126mg/dl and post prandial blood glucose levels >200mg/dl on3 separate tests are suggestive of diabetes mellitus.

However, as per WHO guidelines issued in2011, HbA1c or glycosylated haemoglobin levels, which gives a retrospective view of the3 month blood sugar levels can be used to diagnose diabetes. A HbA1c level of >6.8% is suggestive of diabetes mellitus.
