Firstly it is not written NOR, it is written RON which is Research Octane Number. MON is Motor Octane Number. They are used for gasoline specification. More often than not in retail stations the RON numbers are displayed as indication of the Octane level to match the conusumer's vehicles requirement. In general most countries specifies RON only. In developed countries MON may also be specified (eg. specification used in AKI). RON and MON are used typically as an empiral measurement of fuel's knocking characteristic. RON at low speed and load whereas MON at high speed
