How can a manager ensure that a lateral transfer doesn't destroy a valued employee?

By transferring them to proper position of different location of the company, one that company can still use his experiences, compensating them for their good work, proper recognitions, and the employee has the opportunity of promoting to higher position when they prove their ability and when needed.
