I generally agree, at least with respect to operational employees (factory workers, line workers, and labor in general). However, when speaking about senior supervisory employees and managers, I generally disagree with that statement. I believe that loyalty among management personnel has increased over the last20 years. Naturally, this is dependent upon the environment and corporate structure. Of course there is a tendency for any employee to take on an "it's all about me" attitude. But when the employee, especially a career employee/manager, is comfortable with the fact that the company is looking out for his interests as well as its own, loyalty can and still does exist.

I agree, people have become much more self-oriented these days. They will easily leave you if they get a better offer.

The more important point for the higher management to consider should be why are the employees not loyal? Are they being coached and directed, are they being reimbursed as per expectations? Are the employees happy?

Employment migration one of the reasons. The Average period of employment  in most of the organizations on a decreasing tendency.  Sense of belonging is important that too can be had when one is within the organization for a longer period.
