What is the criteria of suitability to choose a sort of literature for foreign English Learners?

Dr Zuess and Roal Dahl for younger children and then start with "classic" adventure novel for older childrent: "Treasure Island", "The Man in the Iron Mask", "Ivanhoe" etc etc. Then graduate to the literary classics, works by Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. There is so much out there which can be "tailored" to your target audience, for example young girls would love "Black Beauty" by Anne Sewell whilst young boys might prefer "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe, the list and permutations is endless.
