I need an effective explanation of market segmentation on real market base.

Market segmentation is a logical approach of categorizing consumers on base of specific consuming habits i-e my current company supplies construction related equipment to contractors. According to my industry I categorize my consumers in two segments technologically active  (Generation Y) and technologically passive(Generation X) consumers.
