Why do Companies prefer education over experience?

First, let's examine why employers prefer college degrees. Most often, they associate the following characteristics with people who have degrees (and more specifically, four-year degrees):

  • A proven ability to analyze problems, conduct research and produce solutions

  • A proven ability to learn complex, difficult subject matter

  • Proof they are motivated and have drive

  • Proof of intelligence

  • Better interpersonal skills

  • More credible qualifications

Experience with credentials more than education without work credentials.

I don't think that is true to all companies. I have experienced applying to some companies where they preferred working experience over education. I think this depends on the kind of work involved. For example: if the company needs a certain job to be done quickly, they would be more inclined to hiring experienced people. However, if the job is more involved in, for example, analysis where the person to be hired is given time to learn the industry and apply established theories in improving or troubleshooting it, the company would most likely hire someone who has good education.

In our days, a lot of companies prefer a prestigious education and certifications, such as, PMP, PgMP, CISSP, CPA, MBA, and others, compare with the experience, because, they think that this hired person has already up to date needed skills and ready to apply what he learned of these skills in the next coming career projects. So, in my opinion, a positive work related experience and an active certifications/education worth the best of the best candidates.
