word of mouth marketing of product or service-recommendations made by friends, co-workers, or neighbors you know and trust—is still the most effective way to win new customers.

However,it is hardly sufficient, as a way to reach potential customers.

Yes it is an effective selling tool, but not the most effective one. As mr. Khurana said, it is a slow and old tool but still effective.

I believe the most effective way to sell is (and will remain) the face-to-face activity if it is prepared and performed well.

Yes i agree that word of mouth is one of the most effective medium in Advertisement. It spreads like a wild fire and does not have any specific direction. it might take off or it might be grounded. As a marketer you cannot depend on its reach. It is also a crude method of advertisement which has been followed time immemorial.

Disagree, specially for wide and international marketing. We need always remember that word of mouth is limited to local places and can't get the international exposure. also with the word of mouth you can't provide visual confirmation or let say visual marketing, and globally images, sounds and marking films have massive impact on the decision of buying product or services, so the word of mouth could be a starter but never an essential marketing tool, specially for global exposure.

Word of mouth is a fairly effective method of marketing and outreach, I wouldn't label it as the MOSTeffective medium for marketing, but is definitely powerful.

As the saying goes "a lie (or in this case, word of mouth) gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on"  definitely applies to Marketing as well, people have a tendency to believe other's people experience

The most credible advertising is a satisfied customer. So word of mouth from a satisfied customer create a positive brand image in the minds of those he/she has spoken to and often times attracts product or service trial by those that have been told about your business. However, the focus must be on creating happy customers, if this is to work as one disgruntled customer can spoil the business since he/she spreads the bad word of mouth to13 or more people who in turn carry one in similar magnitudes
