When we talk about "character based curriculum", we have the idea to inculcate ethics based on human values in this particular curriculum designed for a specific age group of students.

Secular educational institutions also teach it in different forms to develop this human skill in their students. In religion based educational institutions, mostly respective religious ethics are being taught. Usually it is enough in respect of their religious beliefs about ethics.

Most of the Islamic countries teach Islamic studies as a subject which is inclusive to all the ethical education required to build proper character building in students.

-I believe that we can develop most of the basic subjects on school level in a way which will provide sufficient material for character building and will also reduce the load in the bags.

-Quran, Hadith and Islamic history are rich resources of character building for all age groups.

Resources for Character Education:

  • The Children’s Book of Virtues – a collection of stories, poems, and fables categorized by virtue
  • Fairy Tales – One of our sponsors, Oak Meadow, includes fairy tales as part of both their kindergarten and first grade curriculums. Fairy tales are generally viewed as one of the best ways to introduce young children to the concept of good and evil and the character qualities that heroes represent.
  • Two of our favorite fairy tale collections are The Tall Book of Nursery Tales and Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Talesthough there is at least one story in each book I’ve skipped for various reasons. I’m always looking for collections with the classic stories but without frightening illustrations.
  • A Children’s Bible – I’ve found it challenging at times to find a Bible to read with my children that doesn’t include dumbed down, cartoon-type illustrations. Our favorites so far have been Children’s Everyday Bible and Egermeier’s Bible Story Book.
