If it is company policy to sell customer data to non-competing businesses, then yes I shall permit it to be sold to him. Otherwise, a big NO.

Generally the policies of the major companies won't allow that in what so ever but some small companies would sale their data being protected with the fine lines.

No. I will never employ a person who has a business of his own. The world is so big and i prefer to give an employment opportunity to a very deserving person, who will give his maximum to the development of the company.

In the Middle East, I could recognize many employees having partnership in business activities with money investments which are not pertaining to their line of business.  The employment contracts are for a period of2 years and after that there is a question of uncertainty and the life may become so miserable to them if there is no job afterwards.     Many big entrepreneurs are now in this field the same way; and are  now giving employment to many number of persons.  Either they have some office job or have some job in a  business firm- many often might  have engaged in minor business  which they grow in a small level; they take a shift  after their job previously.  Many good sponsors are also there with good support to them as they know human needs.

But (deviated from the subject a little bit- I feel this is relevant in this contest) the seriousness is there when his prime priority is for his part of business with devotion and less concentration of work in the current level.  Policy of entrepreneurs may differ, many are turning with a blind eye, if it does not affect their business. I also feel so, not to much serious about this.   In business field, many have developed their own business like this--it is a fact.  Before accusing anybody one has to reverse look.

Although every employee should have the right to take opportunities outside his job, but you have to be careful for conflicts of interest. Perhaps the business does not conflict with that of the company, but it may be risky if he uses the company's customer database. The handling of his business with the information he uses from the customer data base may interrupt the relationship between the customer and the company. Customers will keep seeing him as an employee of the company. Any conflict between them and that personal business will for sure affect their relationship with the company.

To my opinion, you may allow employees to invest in other non-competing business, but only financially and they should not have any active role in that business.
