When stress at work interferes with your ability to perform in your job, manage your personal life, or adversely impacts your health, it’s time to take action. Start by paying attention to your physical and emotional health. When your own needs are taken care of, you’re stronger and more resilient to stress. The better you feel, the better equipped you’ll be to manage work stress without becoming overwhelmed.

It is important to tackle the causes of stress in the workplace as stress at work can lead to problems for the individual, working relationships and the overall working environment.  These issues may include lowered self-esteem and poor concentration skills for the employee. The employer may suffer from increasing customer complaints, staff turnover and days lost to sickness.

Agree with all the nice answers from experts. I believe in  "Worrying does not empty tomorrow of its (our) trouble, it empties today of its (our) strength".

People who don't manage stress well can have headaches, stomach pain, sleeping problems, illness, and depression. You can help manage stress by journaling, meditating, exercising, talking to others, or engaging in a hobby.

Stress is what you feel when you have to handle more than you are used to. When you are stressed, your body responds as though you are in danger. It makes hormones that speed up your heart, make you breathe faster, and give you a burst of energy. This is called the fight-or-flight stress response.

Some stress is normal and even useful. Stress can help if you need to work hard or react quickly. For example, it can help you win a race or finish an important job on time.

Dear Venkitaraman, Stress is inevitable in today's worklife purely because of the competition - short time schedules, shortage of finances, resources, capability of people in our teams, and the client demands, and most importantly the pressures our top management puts on us.

When we think the demands being placed on us exceed our ability to cope, we then perceive stress.

So what can we do reduce the impact of stress -

Thousands of websites will give you lots of information, but I wish to just share my experience, as below.

1 Firstly we need to mentally accept, and recognize the universal truth that stress IS GOING TO BE PART OF OUR LIFE. When we try to steer clear of stress, we are only avoiding the problem, because it will eventually catch up with us.

2. Secondly, DONT take everything too seriously. If we take our boss's criticism or his expectations too seriously, it WILL create stress. Bosses will criticise, and we need to understand that that's part of his work.

3. Just do your best, and don't bother with individual's opinions. This is where our "Karma theory" helps... this says that everything is "destined" to happen. When things are destined, why worry? Just do your best, and then relax. As Lord Krishna says in the Gita, "Just do your duty and don't worry about the results".

4. Don't forget to have fun - Must play a game regularly, at least twice or thrice in a week. It keeps the mind agile, and body fit.

5. Have a drink to enjoy it, not to beat stress. Drinks as a stress-buster will only hurt.

6. Yoga / meditation will help.

7. Have a close friend / someone whom you can trust and confide.

8. At work, be clear in communication. If something cannot be done by a particular date, DONT accept the deadline to avoid a confrontation. It only postpones the problem. This is what I observed when I worked in Europe for4 years - Europeans clearly say "NO" when they feel it cannot be done. The simply don't accept a deadline when they know it cannot be done. On the contrary, Indians say "YES" promptly, but don't meet the deadline generally, and then they feel stressed out.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Krish
