Most of the companies are doing backend in .NET or J2EE, this is not bad and probably a legacy of their former development. However recent framework like Meteor (based on NodeJS) can really improve the development time and provides an excellent user experience. Did you company dropped Java, .NET or even PHP, Python based services in favour of NodeJS ?
I don't think a company can drop many years of work to develop the same backend with another language.
But, it can migrate progressively with new architecture like nodeJS and on new project, realized it with NodeJS whereas few years ago, it probably choose another language like Java or C#.
As far I'm concerned, my company start to use NodeJS by now. We use it mainly for the real time application with the implementation of a CTI (Computer Telephony Integration) server and for a monitoring event server. Both use websocket to communicate with clients.
