Best way to segment the target audience is based on what attribute of  your product or service appeals to the target audience, based on that segmentation can be done

For example if our product is a pen which is a use and throw, inexpensive.

Thus  the target would be the masses, in order to narrow down our focus group we could segment based on their Occupations, Students , Hotels , Event Organizers

"Segmenting" is an Marketing method of dividing your Existing & Potential customer's into different groups, thus it would help in designing or creating strategies to compete, attract, retain & grow.

The simplest method is the traditional method of segmenting:-

  1. Demographic : Demographic characteristics have to do with people's vital statistics (The same can be found out through census report). The various categories could be: Gender, Age, Martial Status, Citizenship, Languages spoken, etc
  2. Geographic: an important factor in reaching a targeted group. It could be the : The country, territory, area etc
  3. Physical/Personal History: This category includes the physical and medical characteristics and personal experiences that groups of individuals have in common that may influence their responses to social marketing. Some of the details could be: Current Physical/Mental health status, Physical Disability etc
  4. Psycho-graphic: These characteristics are those that fill out demographic ones with people's lifestyles, beliefs, and values

To identify your target market, you first need to answer these questions:

  • What are you selling, and what makes it so unique? For example, what makes your merchandise different from what people can buy from other big retail chains?

  • To whom do you want to sell it? Are you selling to parents? To retirees? To the environmentally conscious?

  • Why should people buy the product or service from you? Are you open very late at night so that customers who work long hours can drop by your store? Do you offer free delivery of large items so that walk-in customers don’t have to lug your product home?

When you have the answers to these questions, you should do two things:

  • Focus on your primary market. Many business owners fall into the trap of believing that their products or services are “for everyone”— that is, anyone would be interested in or need the products. But even if your business appeals to a broad market of diverse consumers, you need to identify who your ideal consumer is. After you’ve identified your primary market, your advertising should match that focus.

  • Research your market. Knowing your target audience is critical: Your ads won’t work if they don’t appeal to what your potential customers want or need. Research and find out as much as possible about the people you want to sell to !!!
