Involve him/her in the learning context, "pushing" for him/her imagination and creativity for auto-learning and easier share his/her points of view.
In my opinion there is no average students, maybe there is people that have more interest for some subject than other ones; and that way maybe they will look like average..
Depends on how you define average.
If the student has a problem staying on track then I agree with Saiful and give more attention, but in an academic way and not spoiling. Ask student what it is that they don't understand and explain by rephrasing or using examples.
