In my opinion it is all team work, and at the end they are both working towards the same target.
Both Marketing and Sales people should be praised for their efforts towards closing a deal

In a really good organization marketing and sales are part of the same team and both of them get credit.
The marketing team usually generates the sales lead and passes it onto the sales team, which tries to convert it into an actual sale and close the deal.
So, good companies tend to reward people from both the teams.

According to me, Marketing is the art of telling a sweet lie and Sales is the art of dying to sell that lie. Therefore, the sales guy should get all the praises. Probably the sales guy gets the praise because he/she gets incentive for making that sale.

The one that brings the contract signed.
Because its job can be measured and is the one that brings the good news.
Something that is not fair, in my opinion.
A signed contract is a work done by a team.
Each one has done its role to reach the goal.
It's like soccer.
Everybody praise for Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, etc.
they get the fame; but when things go bad, is the defenders or the goalkeeper's fault.
:) The Marketing Dept.
in my opinion makes a hidden but strategical job (for me they are the coach of the soccer team).
Depending on the strategy of this department the results of the company will be good or bad.
