This answer in my point of view so please do not judge MySQL is the best database engine why ??
1- Used in almost all the open source web
2- Is part of the powerful LAMP stack along with Linux, Apache and PHP.

3- Written in C whitch will effect performance
4- MyISAM storage uses b-tree disk tables with index compression for high performance.

5- Support for partitioning and replication.

6- Support for Xpath, full text search.

7- Support for stored procedures, triggers, views etc., and also there is a good database engines you can use like : PostgreSQL Oracle SQLite Microsoft SQL Server
