For giving a faithful answer let us asking the question in other way:

When age is factor to hold the position of project manager position?

We can say that age factor to hold the position of project manager as soon as age is calculated in the following manner:

Age of project manager position is not accounted for since the beginning time of birth, and out of the belly of his mother.

Real age, which is a factor to hold position of project manager is a period starting from completion of the first project, successful completion of a physical.

This period from beginning and that continues to this moment that made him able to sit in the royal throne, the project manager with confidence and contentment as a result of experience and expertise throughout this past period.

That is calculated by:

Number of days spent in various projects.

Number of multiple cases tested.

Numbers of difficult conditions coexist with it.

Numbers of positions critical to work will enable them to overcome.

Size of mistakes that occurred and was able to correct.

Numbers of various work teams that have achieved many successes under his leading.

Numbers of people who deal with them in all different stripes and multiple disparate behaviors and foul.

Amount of accumulated experience with them.

Number of valuable learned lessons during that period.

This is the final outcome that determines whether age is factor or not factor to hold a position of project manager.

No, as long as you have the experience, knowledge and personal capabilities. You have to take into consideration that you should have the health to live with pressure and stress.

You will read that there are no discrimination regarding sex, national origin, "age", disability, and so forth.

In reality it does matter, expertise is a function of time just like the age of pilots of the747's or the A380's, read well the companies advertisements and the ages of their project managers.

experience comes with age. You can study and understand PM , but you need to have a certain doses of experience. Also the age is seen as something to respect. In a team I first have the most problems with people that are older then me. This is tackled easily, but is also a sign that age counts.

Knowledge, experience, commitment and dedication to execute the task at hand determine your level of expertise and success. Age does not necessarily determine your expertise, but older persons having been in a position a bit longer than a younger person does have the advantage of a bit more experience since such a person have faced more challenges and had to find ways of overcoming it.
