Sensible heat causes change in temperature and not in phase but latent heat cause change in phase not in temperature

Imran Mohammed
par Imran Mohammed , Mechanical Engineer , Transworld Contracting Company

Sensible heat is heat supplied or taken away and causes an immediate change in temperature without changing the state.
While latent heat is heat supplied or taken away and causes a change in state without change in temperature.
This difference can be applied to the certain properties of water/steam.
This is called the thermodynamics properties of steam.

Sensible heat is the heat gained by temperature itself. For instance, heat gained from equipments, fabric heat gain (through architectural elements such as walls, windows, doors), lighting, etc. On the other hand, latent heat is gained by temperature & change of state of temperature. For instance, heat gained by moisture, water features, etc. Occupancy load & food are few example that contributes to both sensible & latent heat gain. Cooling load estimation spreadsheet & e20 HAP have options for such loads. It needs prime importance to condition the air in case of heavy latent loads. A proper humidifier or dehumidifier component in the system shall be correctly prescribed to encounter such load for comfort conditions.
