Warehousing is actually part of a material management process concerned with storage of materials to deliver on time. What is that, that needs to be delivered on time? The raw materials and some of the semi finished goods and parts that are required for manufacturing. That’s one type of material.Finished goods that are required to be delivered to retail shops and customers is another type of material.

The warehouse can also be used to store technology products like back up tapes. Large organisations which depend on information technology store their data in electronic format in tapes and other media. So where will they store this? These materials have to be stored under proper storage conditions and there are warehouses designed to store such technology products as magnetic tapes, backup tapes, CDs, DVDs, etc.

So with this input on warehousing, let us try to define what is warehousing provides time and place utility for raw materials, industrial goods and finished products. Allowing companies to use customer service as a dynamic value adding competitive tool. So warehousing is not just a place to store and deliver material. It is now becoming a strategic device, a strategic concept in the entire supply chain.

Warehousing: Used to store and manage inventory.

Warehousing Objectives:

  • Provide timely customer service.

  • Keep track of items so they can be found readily and correctly.

  • Minimize the total physical effort and thus the cost of moving goods into and out of storage.

  • Provide communication links with customers.

Best Regards

Today most organisation whether they are manufacturing companies or distribution centres they are looking at warehouse as a Strategic tool in Inventory Management. Warehouse is also used for a very important activity called Customer Service and finally Warehouse operations also do include a lot of Compliance, Documents and Information Management.

  1. Today’s Warehouse Plays a New Role.

Warehouses are no longer just for storage. In today's cost-conscious, efficiency-driven environment, many manufacturers are reevaluating their definition of warehousing. Anything that doesn't lend itself to a high-speed, highly mechanized, low-labor environment is being sent to the warehouse.

Driving this evolution is a desire to take links out of the supply chain and make sure that costs are optimized and as close to the customer as possible.

  2. Shared space environment.
  3. Secondary packaging
  4. Cross-docking

Your question have two classifications . One is product based inventory in manufacturing Second is service based inventory. Example for first such as any finished goods or any half finished goods Example for second is customer service goods For first as usual physical inventory or inventory is related to first group and more the inventory it will surely reflect organization cost and drawbacks. Second group inventory The lean time taken to process a lead or input the query and the time taken to generate it in output is called service based inventory . The more the time taken to solve or serve the query we can say the more inventory in hand with service based management So the more lean time taken that much of poor quality service provided to the end user Finally both inventories plays a major role on its own sides

Today is very good question.

Their is2 different  Manufacturing & Non Manufacturing units.

a. We have to received the Delivery note form Workshop / Transfer  production material to Warehouse stock list. by preparing MRV.  That will show you inventory stock list.

b. The Delivery comes as per our PO /LPO  units  from supplier workshop.  But this is Non-Manufacturing units received and prepare the MRV.  That will show you inventory stock list.

A Warehouse could meant for storage or it could be Distribution Center -Something like in a Hub & Spoke Setup that Logistics Business uses.

As a storage facility, the warehouse is used for supply management for cases where there is long lead time required or/and the supply is coupled with high order costs and low holding cost. It means when it is costly to order material and it is less costly to hold it, we can use a warehouse for storage. It safeguards from price hike, external factors like labor or transport strikes that can result in delayed material delivery.

A ware house meant to work like hub and spoke in a distribution setup in not meant for storage. It is used to break-bulk the lots, sort and then make lots again and then reseeding to desired location. There is no concept of storage for a such a warehouse. You can consider warehouse of courier services working on such concept.

Either Manufacturing Warehouse or non-manufacturing unit

Both perform key role an organizations.

Should be all required inventory items on Shelf (On-hand)

Keep all the proper records for all receiving and all issuing.

Keep up-date Min-Max level as per usage.

Both the unit is important so Warehouse should be keep safe stock all time

Roll of warehouse is similar in both Manufacturing & non Manufacturing unit.

where you can store minimum level of inventories according to your distribution & sales setup.

The mission of a warehouse is to hold inventory, to balance the variation between production schedules and demand. By doing this warehouse can actually can help meet the supply and demand gap. A warehouse can also be used as a stock gap arrangement to facilate the Just In Time delivery of raw materials and subsystems for production. It can also facilitate quick response to a changing market demand of a certain product. The mission of a warehouse is to be located near the point of requirement. So if a warehouse is required to store raw materials for production, obviously the warehouses have to be located close to the production places or manufacturing places
