I think IDEA has to be the main core in all ads, if there is an ad with just a beautiful song that has nothing to do with main message or target audience, then it's a waste of time and money...
The best ad I saw was awareness commercial one, it was about Safety Belt, really amazing and direct to the point.
More than 16 Million watched that commercial You may check it on YouTube, it is called Embrace Life - always wear your seat belt...

For me an advert has to have a song or someone talking, it kind of hypnotizes me.
My favorites adverts are from Porsche, specially the one for the 918 Spyder.
The noise of the engine is amazing, and the story is interesting like in all their adverts.

An idea.
And a song could be part of the idea.
I am an Indian and this was one of the Indian ads that took an award, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdcE0AKi_JU It had an idea and a very strong 'music' in the form of a background score.
Although, it might seem a little cheesy, it worked well for the brand.
It was a topic spoken of incessantly for days to come.
The brand is now synonymous with permanent markers.
Regards, Diana

an ad must have a unique idea in order to attract customers whether there is music or not.

The advertiser has to show a high understanding of the nature of the item and the nature of consumer ...The idea is the foundation.
All possibilities are used for simplify the idea clarifying or in some cases to convince the consumer its need to this item, which may not be in need of it already ....
the song is one of the means of penetration into non-awareness .....
buying decision for most current commodities is unconscious decision ...
may result from the continued pursuit of the idea ....
and music, for example, is the process of recovering climate idea, most consumers are not in a real need, Advertisers and marketers are creating the needs .....Our job creating needs not satisfy the needs.

it depends on the product and to my view both can work at the same time as long as it carries the message appropriately

Though we can dissect an advertisement into its various elements like idea, sound, emotional appeal, visual elements, background etc., a great advertisement will always be a combination of these individual elements.
The idea and the message that the ad wishes to convey are the most important aspects of any advertisement.
The rest of the elements deal with how this idea or message is packaged and delivered to the audience.
The visual appeal, songs, jingle background, cultural elements etc are all means to help the creative team strengthen that idea even further.
Most of the established brands have a jingle, like Titan using the famous Mozart composition or Nescafe Open Up, using the Lauren Anderson song.
Even if the people who have have never heard about Mozart or Lauren Anderson , when they hear the jingle, they directly associate the song with the respective brands.
This clearly shows the power of music and such a strong association is possible only by exposing the target audience to the ad repeatedly.
About the favourite ad, thats a tough one, there are so many brilliant piece of creative work out there, appealing to each emotion and every year people are just raising the benchmark.
Here are a few I really like.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejEBSeddCg8 (Using song to tell the story) The Nike commercials - The Jordan Series, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZ2EKswyTao (more impact on the message) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HypgcCT1r68 (for a cause)
