I think that the term ''marketing investigation'' is quite appropriate and widely used-simply type it in some browser to see how many results you will get using this term.

The basic purpose of marketing investigation or research is only to get answer where we stand in the market wit our product or to make the strategy accordingly.

In my opinion, the more appropriate question would be:

"What is the basic purpose of Marketing Research?"

Answer: The basic purpose is to identify the right "Marketing Mix" for a product or a service.
