Introduction: I've interviewed for attorney jobs and I have interviewed others for the same position.
While you may think you are the best person for the job, you will not have it if you cannot convince the interviewer.
To interview well, you should avoid these common pitfalls.
Mistake #1: Thinking you won't be asked about your resume.
Most interviews have a variety of questions.
Some ask you about qualifications.
Others focus on interests.
How are these questions crafted? Well, first off - if it is on your resume, it is fair game.
I made this mistake at job interviews when I did not adequately prepare to answer for my interests and hobbies.
Early on I realized interviewers like to find a personal fact volunteered by the job candidate.
They will then discuss that topic in an attempt to relax the candidate.
I've been asked questions about my volunteer experience, interest in playing the cello, and foreign language proficiency.
I failed to take these questions seriously and tried to answer them and move onto other topics.
My best interviews were where I've had to focus on my personal qualities.
After all, if you got the interview, then they at least know you meet the minimum qualifications.
Your personal qualities are exhibited through your interests.
If you had a hobby for several years, it may show dedication and persistence.
If you volunteer in the community, it may suggest you are good at socializing and potentially able to gain new leads for business.
Mistake #2: Spending too much time asking questions This is pretty simple.
If you're asking too many questions, you do not show interest, you show ignorance.
So many people take the final question "Do you have any questions for us?" and turn it into a half hour discussion that no interviewer wants to have.
I recall interviewing a few candidates who asked more than the usual 2-3 questions.
If questions should be asked, they should be conversational and scattered throughout the interview.
Don't save them for the end.
The ending question is just a signal to wrap up the interview.
Mistake #3: Focusing on the content of the answer too much and ignoring the delivery I used to think interviewers want to hear the perfect answer.
Not really.
If you're interviewing with one person, they are looking at your body language and style of delivery.
As long as what you say is somewhat informed, all that matters is being able to keep the conversation rolling and fill the silence.
Mistake #4: Underestimating the "peer interview" (speaking with current employees) When I have interviewed, it has been as an employee.
Many candidates think this is the time to relax.
In some regards, it is.
When current employees are introducing candidates to the office and explaining how the job really works, we do so with good intentions.
However, we want a good person to work with.
If there is any hint that the person being hired is going to be a problem, we let the boss know right away.
Mistake #5: Sending thank you cards, instead of contacting current employees beforehand I have received thank you cards and frankly, I don't really care for them.
Some places may, but most do not.
Most people have made a decision about you at the end of the interview day.
However, what helps is making contact with people that work at the job.
Why? It creates an automatic reference.
That employee can alert the interviewer that a person they know is coming to interview.
It gives a common talking point.
Conclusion: There are several mistakes a person can make at an interview, so try not to memorize what you shouldn't be doing.
Rather, think of the interview for the interviewers point of view.
Make sure to be fluent in your resume and its contents.
Highlight experiences in your resume that would lead the interviewer to talk about.
Only ask questions if they are good and don't wait until the end.
Remember to treat this process as a conversation.
Small talk matters.
Respect the current employees because they can have a say in the hiring.
Finally, contact the office beforehand, because a thank you card, even if done thoughtfully, is usually too late.

Shows lack of discipline and lack of respect for interviewers time.
- Sitting down before being asked to do so.
Wait for interviews to sit down first or until they ask you.
- Asking too many questions about the salary - looks like you're only interested in that and not the job.
- Not researching company or job - employers/interviewers can tell if you're not really interested or wrong match for job.
- Rushing answers to questions - take your time.

2) Inappropriate dressing.
