Waste is anything that uses resources, but does not add real value to the product or service. Waste is “anything other than the minimum amount of equipment, materials, parts, space, and worker’s time which are absolutely essential to add value to the product."
Agree with Mr Abdou, that "waste" should be linked to value add in the customer's point of view; instead of to "necessity" -which is in the producer's opinion.
A wasted resource is one that is spent without adding any value to the final product. For example, inventory is necessary in warehouse operation's point of view, but it is a waste in Lean manufacturing.
