One's responsibility as a guest service officer is to ensure guest satisfaction as well as safety at all times. Similar tasks might be recognizing a guest at least three meters away, giving them your attention and most importantly "the smile" initiating a friendly atmosphere. Your responsibility as a guest service officer is to be active (not passive) and attentive to customers, being able to identify their needs. Also, one should be as hospitable as possible, having great communication skills and decision-making skills. Above all, the guest service officer should maintain his/her professionalism.

There is not much a difference in responsibilities of this position at an hotel of on a ship, except for the vibe you give with your service. On the ship, you are more likely to have a nice sense of humor and be less formal with the guests, as long as you ensure that your services exceed their expectations.
