Well this is the most important question that an interviewer ask and how you answer this question, make a lot of difference you being selected or not (especially for higher level positions).
There are a few things that are not mentioned in your CV and even if you mention it, it will be clear when you speak out; like your your personality, your attitude, your interpersonal skills, your leadership style, your managerial qualities, decision making skills, your achievements, etc,.
So more than just your name, education and present position you should narrate those details which you are good at and how you match the position you are being interviewed for. In other words, this question also means "why should I hire you?". So answer accordingly.
@ Rizwan Rafiq: But I think interviewer already have your resume, you don't have to provide such information. Its already mentioned in your resume.
Need to understand who is asking this question. Technical interview reply would different from the reply to the HR. Some points are mentioned below.
1- Related Expereince to the post you applied for with 45 seconds
2- Educational background (formal education) and how it fits the requirement (30 seconds)
3- Related projects and trainings (30 seconds)
4- Why applied for job (20 seconds)
