These are two older methodologies of teaching second language.

Audio lingual method is also known as AURAL method. It is based on listening and speaking drills. It does not recommend to translate the vocabulary into the learners native language. Like Direct method it prefers to teach vocabulary by its use and practice it until the learner becomes confident in using it.

Grammar translation method is an older one which used to translate the text word by word in the native language of the learner. In simple words it holds the hand of the learner to pass him through the process of translating the text mutually to learn the second language.

Audio ligual method implies listening and repetition of the given text whereas grammar translation method implies word to word translation of the text in the learner's mother tongue. These methods are used for teaching English to the students of second or foreign languages.
