heat pipe and energy wheel are both energy RECOVERY systems , so they are used to recover energy that we usually waste , in the case of hot countries were you have fresh air handling units , you will get the air from the external atmosphere (with high temperature and humidity) and treat it with the source you have in the unit (the compressor) so the compressor will have the load of cooling the external air plus removing the humidity (if in a high humidity area) , while at the same time we just simply throw the internal air which is much colder than outside and dry , so the idea is to exchange heat between the two streams of air before throwing the internal air outside , and inserting the fresh air inside
example: just imagine using fresh air unit in the gulf area were the temperature is45 and humidity more than80% (this air we will throw inside the residential area)
and the exhaust air is27 and humidity45% (this air will be thrown outside)
Heat recovery wheel is economy unit used to cool down the fresh air before it enters the AHU Mixing box. The return or exhaust air which are cooler than outside air are passed through this wheel at one side and fresh air on the other side. In this way the hot fresh air is cooled down to certain level which reduces load on the cooling equipment.

Recovery wheel is used to recover the thermal energy we usually waste through the building exhaust. As we always have building exhaust at lower temperature as compare to the ambient air temperature we intake as fresh air. so its always beneficial to transfer the heat to the exhaust air leaving the building.
There are many types of heat recovery units the most common are the (thermo wheel ,plate type) ,heat recover always used in huge HVAC systems ,we choose the type of the heat recover unit according to heat transfer eff. we need (hot areas like golf need high heat transfer eff.)

usually heat recovery unit is attached with the AHU and it has to be supplied from the same supplier of the AHU to be compatible with the AHU
The return Air is a mixture of cold air,hot air&,contaminated air and it will be dispose to the atmosphere via
the return ducts, due to the heat wheel installed hope the supply air is not being mix in with the contaminated
return air.
