The best ways to handle irate customers are:

1) Understand the customers complaint thoroughly

2) Empathise 

3) Try to think from the customers perspective. Like if you were in the customers place what would be the best solution to the problem of course at the same time keeping in mind the company policies too

4) Check what are the best options you can give to the customer

5) If there isnt a proper solution try to make the customer understand in a way that you make the customer feel that you understand his situation

6) Try offering the customer another product at a discount/ compliment if that is possible and if the customer is an important one

7) Try to get an important person of the company to talk to the customer making them understand that you care and you are considering the complaint carefully

8) Make sure that you keep updating the customer about the complaint and what is being done about it

9) Try to always give an approximate time to the customer by when the problem could be solved and make sure that you get it done by then or else the customer could get even more upset

10) You need to have lots of patience handling irate customers. If things go out of hand be stern but polite
