1..conduct a data quality assessment
2..built a data quality firewall
3..create a data governance board
4..unify business intelligence
As the question is how to improve, I assume that you have already identified your data issues, cleansed and fixed the exisiting data and looking for further inprovement, with that I can say:-
1- Indentify your master data domains including the set-up/meta data.
2- Assign an owner for each domain.
3- Establish your master data governance.
4- Set proper controls (validations) in your system(s) for transactional data.
5- Develop your data retention policy.
6- Perform data archiving periodically.
7- Let your BI system be the main system for reporting.
8- Ensure that any EDI/B2B or any interfaces are properly monitored and adress all data issues promptly.
9- Set the right KPIs to monitor the quality of your data.
The above are not necessary sequencial steps, but remeber data quality is a long journey and - like any other quality aspect - it requires top managment commitment else just forget it.
I hope the above helps.
