..............................Thanks............................

You can assume the width and determine the depth.

controlling that by the loads, moments and forces which apply on joints.

How to determine the width of each type of joints in structures and buildings.

Building's structures are divided into two parts, the calculation of the structure depends on engineers.  with buildings structure is good building automatically strong if the building structure no good any building collapse in few days.  So, that's way the building structure very important.

Thanks with best regards,

is a mid separation design to relieve stress on building materials caused by building movement-induced by thermal expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes, sway caused by wind pressure, seismic events.

It depends on the loads the structure will carry.

Due to the low tensile capacity of concrete, some cracking in reinforced concrete is unavoidable. Contraction joints provide a weakened plane for cracks to form. Through the use of architectural details, these jOints can be located so that cracks will occur in less conspicuous locations within a building and possibly be eliminated from view. Expansion joints allow thermally induced movements to occur with a minimum build-up of stress. The greater the spacing between jOints, the greater the stresses. Typically, these jOints isolate a frame into a series I , 3 of segments with enough joint width to allow the building to expand with increasing temperature. By isolating the segments, expansion joints also provide relief from cracking due to contraction, and therefore act in a dual role.

There are Six main types of joints;

  • Pivot Joints Move Side to Side. ...
  • Hinge Joints Bend Your Limbs. ...
  • Ball and Socket Joints Provide Rotation. ...
  • Condyloid Joints Twist and Bend. ...
  • Saddle Joints Have a Unique Shape. ...
  • Gliding Joints Allow Smooth Motion.
  • All types of joints are used in rigid pavement construction methods for all PCC pavement types. CRCP uses longitudinal reinforcing steel in order to limit the number of transverse contraction joints, but it still uses longitudinal joints and periodic transverse joints. Joints can be formed in two ways.

it depends on the structure situation after declaring the analysis of joint place in building or any structure we decide that it is a construction joint or a expansion joint than we decide the filling material for that joint place to fill it up.

The width of each type of joints in structures and buildings can be determined by measuring the space in between the meeting points of two blocks or concrete
