I personally think that trigger point release is more effective as it provide quicker results than simple massage but if soft tissue massage is added up with trigger point release best results are seen.

My practice here in the Philippines is base on the techniques which is the: The Aleko Approach™ is a set of advance and modified movements you learn to improve your posture, reduce back, neck and shoulder, knee pain, and learn the proper stretching.
By utilizing the extensive knowledge and expertise of Trigger Point Therapy (TPT), Myofascial Release Therapy (MRT) and A1 Stretching it will helps to relieve a person in pain, stiffness/tightness and makes them more functional again.
Without using any modalities such as TENS, Ultrasound, Moist heat and massage.
But with the approach or I should say The "Aleko Approach" combination of Trigger Point Therapy(TPT), Myofacial Release Therapy(MRT), A1 Stretching and Moxa Stick (Heated chalk) is very effective to relive Pain and stiffness.
My patient's Move Better, Look Better and Fell Better!
