Tons = gpm x delta T / 24

delta T - temperature diffrence chilled water

1- Chiller Ton = (GPMx∆T (Delta Temp)) /24

2- cooling Tower Ton= ( GPMx∆T (Delta Temp)) /30

Total Tonnage of chillers =( 500 x GPM X Delta T (F) )  / 12000

TTotal Tonnage of cooling towers = ( 500 x GPM X Delta T (F) )  / 15000

In this application, the cooling tower must handle a building load of 12,000 BTUH per ton plus the compressor heat of about 3,000 BTUH/ton.1 Design ∆T (Design Temperature Drop) This is conservative in light of today’s chiller efficiencies, which often consume less than 3,000 BTUH/ton.

Dear Sharif.

1- For evaporator: the equation for water chiller is Q=500GPM (T2-T1) Where Q is in [Btu/hr] and T is in [F]. Converting Btu/hr to TR  (dividing by12000) and considering10 degrees Fahrenheit for temperature difference (water inlet-water outlet), we reach the following formula:

TR=0.42GPM

2- For condenser in water cooled condensers: Consider3 GPM for one TR.

Please note that it may vary depends on temperature difference in your system.

Q=m Cv delta t Q=1 ton = 12000 ÷3.41 watt m (mass flow rate ) =v(flow rate) × p(density) Cv= 4200 J/kg.k delta t=5.5 k Q = v×p×Cv×delta t 12000÷3.41= v× 1000 ×4200×5.5 v = 0.00015 m3 / s transfer to gpm = 2.4 gpm

(500)*Q= m * diffT

diffT = 12000/2.4/500
