Sign of placental seperation could be in the first second and third trimesters as well as post delivery.

In the first and second trimesters there could be fresh bleeding followed by intermittent abdominal pains and could result in miscarriages

In the third trimester this could be painless trickle of blood from the vagina mostly in placenta located in the lower segments, placenta praevia is suspected but in placenta located in normal positions, there is associated abdominal pain, the fetal movement might be reduced the uterus becomes woody hard on palpation and times it becomes difficult to pick up fetal heart. Suspicion of abruptio placentae comes into mind

In the post partum period sign of placenta seperation include more bleeding and tug on the cord does not receed any more

First sign is lengthening of the cord as the placenta separate, this can be appreciated when the clamp is placed close to the perineum.

Second sign is that the uterus become globular and firmer as the placenta descend to the lower uterine segment and the uterus retracts.

Third sign is occurs when the uterus rises in the abdomen due to the descent of the placenta into the vagina and the uterus is pushed upwards.

Finally there is gush of blood as the placenta separate completely, the retroplacental clot escapes as the placenta separates.
